What Is a Harmonium?
The harmonium is a keyboard instrument that produces sound by pushing air through metal reeds using bellows. Brought to India in the 19th century, it has become indispensable in Indian classical, devotional (bhajan/kirtan), Bollywood, and folk music.
Unlike a piano, the harmonium uses a drone — a sustained tonic note — that gives it that unmistakable warm, resonant quality. Indian musicians use the Sargam notation system (Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Dha Ni) rather than Western Do-Re-Mi, though both refer to the same seven-note scale.

Make Your First Sound
Click any white key on the on-screen keyboard, or press the A key on your computer keyboard to play Sa (the tonic note). The first note you hear is the beginning of your journey.
Explore the Controls
Use the Transpose slider to change key, the Volume knob to adjust level, and enable Reverb for a richer concert-hall sound. Toggle between Sargam (Sa Re Ga) and Western (C D E) note labels.

Playing Your First Melody
The best first melody for harmonium beginners is the simple Sa Re Ga Ma ascending scale. It uses only natural (white) keys and trains your fingers to find each note confidently.
Try This: Sargam Scale (Ascending)
Press keys A → S → D → F → G → H → J → K in order
Once you can play the ascending scale smoothly, try the descending: K → J → H → G → F → D → S → A. Then practice going up and down continuously until it flows naturally.
After mastering the basic scale, try simple bhajan tunes. "Raghupati Raghava Raja Ram" can be played entirely on white keys in the Sa (C) octave — a perfect beginner piece.
Tips to Improve Faster
Practice Slowly First
Speed is a byproduct of accuracy. Play each scale at a comfortable pace before increasing tempo. Muscle memory builds from correct repetition, not fast repetition.
Learn Sargam Notation
Indian classical music is taught through Sargam syllables (Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Dha Ni). Understanding these will help you learn songs from notation sheets, YouTube tutorials, and teachers much faster.
